Echoes of My Journey
“From a young age, music was an integral part of my life. Listening to songs on the radio and enjoying my father’s LP records nurtured my passion for music early on.” That for you is Verus Ferreira, well-known Mumbai based senior music journalist for over 3 decades.
He was and remains, an aficionado first, who strayed into writing on music. He began his journalistic career in 1992 with the youth magazine The Teenager, as Trainee Assistant Editor. He was then selected and became part of the Editorial Board of the magazine and until its closure as The Teenager Today in September 2024. Verus was a regular contributor in the music section with a monthly music column to his credit.
A few years later he was appointed Associate Editor of The Secular Citizen newsweekly for three years. As a freelance journalist he also worked on features on music, youth and current
affairs.
Passionate about writing, his articles have appeared in My Doctor, The Times of India supplements – Bombay Times and Westside Plus, Mid- day’s The Brief, AV Max (a lifestyle magazine), Afternoon Despatch & Courier and The Free Press Journal, Yuva and several others.
Verus was also one of the Chief Feature Writers with The Record music magazine for eight years. Besides, he was part of the organizing team of The Teenager magazine’s annual The Teen of the Year Pageant and on the Panel of Judges at the finals of The Teen of the Year 2000 Pageant.
Coupling his writing skills with his music prowess, Verus has had the distinction of curating the onboard playlist for various airlines like South African Airways, Air India, and Jet Airways, besides also contributing to the Jet Airways magazine, Jet Screen.
He also worked part-time as an E-Content Executive with prominent music websites such as www.ragatorock.com and later www.musicabsolute.com.
Further, Verus has authored two very interesting books titled The Great Music Quiz Book [Better Yourself Books] and The Great Rock Music Quiz Book [Story Mirror]. The Foreword to The Great Music Quiz Book was written by renowned santoor player Rahul Sharma and the book was released by Bollywood singer and music composer Gajendra Verma of Mann Mera (from the film Table No. 21) fame at the Title Waves book store in Bandra on 12th February 2013. The Great Rock Music Quiz Book, the Foreword to which was written by Bollywood music composer Leslie Lewis of Colonial Cousins fame, was released on 2nd December 2017.
“A camera is a save button for the mind’s eye,” says Roger Kingston. Not many may know that giving flesh to this sentiment is Verus who has gamely graduated to photo journalism. Indeed, Verus is quite an avid photographer whose pictures of events he has covered have graced many glossies, newspapers and online portals down the years. And not merely music-related photographs, but general images from sports to NGOs, travel to wildlife and the like.
Appropriately, then, Verus was also featured in the Smart Photography magazine (March 2024) in relation to Concert Photography where 8 pages were devoted to showcasing his work as a concert photographer. Thereafter, The Sunday Free Press Journal newspaper (17th March 2024) also featured him on the Smart Photography page for his work on Concert Photography. Business India (13th September 2024 to 30th October 2024) also featured him in their People Column.
India’s first ever Music Concert Photography Exhibition, held by Verus at the Bombay Art Society in Bandra in November 2024, received encouraging reviews from various quarters. The week-long exhibition, which was inaugurated by Louis Banks, the Godfather of Jazz in India, showcased 64 images of Indian and International artists.
In keeping with his passion for writing, Verus has also contributed a chapter on the Christian Contribution to Music and Entertainment in the Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth and St Pauls joint publication of A Concise Encyclopedia of Christianity in India which was released on 10th June 2014 at the Papal Athanaeum in Pune. Another book Christians in India – The Nation’s Vital Asset, a two-volume set, slated for release in 2026, will be featuring a chapter written by him titled Indian Christians and the Exhilaration of Music.
Interestingly, at the XIVth edition of the East Indian Community Awards (EICA) 2024 held on 29th November, 2024 at Marshall Lawns, Aksa, Mumbai, he was honoured with the Kaka Baptista East Indian Star of the Year 2024 award. The awards honoured 42 East Indian achievers for their contribution to various fields. The awards are organized by the Mobai Gaothan Panchayat.
He has also contributed a chapter Indian Christians in the Exhilaration of Music, to the forthcoming yet-to-be-released encyclopedia titled Christians in India – The Nation’s Vital Asset, which is slated for release in two volumes in 2026.
As a freelance music journalist and correspondent, his work experience with the Indian media spans three decades, in the course of which he has regularly contributed music-related articles to various newspapers and glossies.
Verus is also the Founder of music portal www.musicunplugged.in and presently writes for The Free Press Journal newspaper and the music website www.musicunplugged.in
When not working on his laptop, you will find Verus relaxing by the beach at his farmhouse, near Mumbai.

The Great Rock Music Quiz Book
The Great Rock Music Quiz Book launch was held on 2nd December 2017 at Title Waves, Bandra, Mumbai in the august presence of Bollywood composer Lesle Lewis. The 16 chapters in the book examines the life and times of prominent rock music stars in a quiz format with over 950 questions and answers that details their biography in a totally new style, a fun and entertaining way, than reading a lengthy biography of the artist.
